What is a DUNS number used for?
Dun & Bradstreet assigns the nine-digit number to a specific legal entity or location. Platforms use it to check whether a company’s name, address and legal status belong together.
Apple Developer
Required when an organization enrolls in the Apple Developer Program. Individual accounts don’t need one.
Google Play
Organization accounts in Play Console normally require DUNS-based verification.
Microsoft Store
Microsoft recommends DUNS for faster verification, but also accepts specified business documents.
FDA and suppliers
Certain FDA registrations and international procurement processes use DUNS as a facility or supplier identifier.

The legal name and address must match.
Most failures happen after the request. A trade name at Apple, an old D&B address or the wrong Google location can trigger rejection even when all nine digits are valid. Copy the legal name and address from the result.

What is DUNS?
DUNS means Data Universal Numbering System. It isn’t a Dutch KvK number, VAT ID, LEI, EIN or EORI. D&B maintains the register, and one group can have several numbers for separate entities or locations.

Common questions
Is a DUNS number free?
Lookup is free here. A standard request may be free through D&B or a platform flow. Local reports and expedited processing may cost money.
How long does a request take?
Apple says to allow up to five business days through its flow. Google advises allowing up to 30 days. Platform synchronization can take additional time.
Can one company have several numbers?
Yes. Separate legal entities and locations can each have their own DUNS number. Choose the record whose name and address match the account or facility being verified.
Do I need DUNS for SAM.gov?
No. The U.S. government replaced DUNS with SAM.gov’s Unique Entity ID (UEI) on 4 April 2022.

IWD built this readable interface to D&B’s search flow with D&B’s permission. IWD doesn’t issue DUNS numbers and isn’t part of Dun & Bradstreet. Search fields are used only to query D&B; results are a point-in-time view and D&B remains the source of record.
